Sold Out

A rare original pocket sketching case from C Roberson & Co.

The case is called ‘The Officer’s Case’ as this highly portable case was designed specifically for British military officers who were traveling abroad or on campaign.

The Officer’s Case no.3 contains a bijou japanned paintbox with 18 colours, a Cambridge Sketch Block by Madderton & Co (a couple of pages have been used), two powdered C Roberson colours (astral green and burnt umber), a compass and a tube of monstral blue watercolour paint. Not all are original to the case, but the paintbox and sketchbook are.

The case made from Morocco Grained Leather is in remarkably good condition for a piece over a hundred years old.

The case also contains the calling card of The Duke & Duchess of Richmond & Gordon. While the provenance is not guaranteed the piece was purchased in Sussex close to Goodwood, the seat of the Dukes of Richmond.

When closed the case measures 14.5 cm x 11.1 cm x 5.5 cm approx.
