A Reeves & Inwood antique watercolour paint cake in Indian Red.

An rare paint cake dating from the 1780s, produced by Reeves & Inwood. William Reeves along with his brother Thomas was the founder of the world renowned Reeves company. He joined with John Inwood in the late 18th century. The company was only in existence for around 30 years.

The cake features the Reeves & Sons crest of arms, a combination of the King’s Arms and The Blue Coat Boy, as well as their famous greyhound logo. The reverse of the cake states “Reeves & Inwood, Original Invention, Superfine Colour, To The Royal Family”.

The cake is unused but is a little compressed and may have been damaged when in storage.

Indian Red is a heavy red pigment that originates from Ormus which was part of the Persian Gulf.

The cake measures 2.7 cm x 1.8 cm x 0.6 cm. The cake weighs 7.2 grams.
